Congressman alarmed at Christian plight in Mideast

WASHINGTON - A Republican congressman who just returned from the Middle East says U.S. aid to Egypt should be conditioned on how it treats its besieged Christian minority.
Virginia Congressman Frank Wolf says many of the Coptic Christians he met believe the U.S. supports Egypt's Muslim Brotherhood regime regardless of the persecution they suffer.
Wolf also visited Christian refugees in Lebanon who have fled Syria's civil war.
Despite overwhelming support in the House, Wolf's bill creating a Special Envoy for Religious Minorities in the Middle East and South Central Asia has been rebuffed by the Senate and State Department.
He says the Middle East, where Christianity first took root, is at risk of losing virtually all of its native Christian population.
