Ghent Road in Akron reopens after suspected drunken driver hits fire hydrant

AKRON, Ohio - A suspected drunken driver crashed into a fire hydrant on Ghent Road between Smith Road and Knollwood Lane around 1 a.m. Thursday in Akron along the Akron-Fairlawn border. 

Water was gushing about 6 feet out of the ground for nearly three hours while workers located shutoff valves.

Police said the driver was injured and appeared to be under the influence of drugs or alcohol.

At 4:15 a.m. the road reopened.

No other information was immediately released.
