17-year-old arrested after gay man attacked outside Cocktails Lounge in Cleveland

CLEVELAND - Police have made an arrest in connection with the beating of a man outside a Cleveland gay bar late last month.

Jared Fox was walking from his car to Cocktails Lounge at Detroit Avenue and West 93rd Street when he was attacked by a group of juveniles on Aug. 31. The case is being investigated as a hate crime.

Police arrested a 17-year-old from Cleveland's west side on a robbery felonious assault warrant, according to the Cleveland Division of Police. He was taken into custody without incident by First District officers and will be held at the Cuyahoga County Juvenile Detention Center.

"They just started beating me," Fox said in a YouTube video he made following the attack. "They punched my glasses into my face and sliced it right there" he said while pointing to the cut on his nose. He also suffered a ruptured eardrum. "They stomped on me, my back, my ribs while I was on the ground."

Cleveland police said they received four calls that night about a group of males disturbing the area and assaulting a customer at Cocktails Lounge.

Then on Sept. 6, police were called to the same bar for kids throwing rocks onto the enclosed patio. A 13-year-old was arrested in that incident.

Two weeks ago, the city of Cleveland sent a nuisance letter to Cocktails Lounge saying police had been called there nine times in the last year. The letter also said that repeated calls burden taxpayers and requested an action plan from the bar's management.
