Cleveland police investigate fatal shooting of 17-year-old on West 117th Street and Lorain Avenue

CLEVELAND - Cleveland police are investigating the fatal shooting of a 17-year-old in the area of West 117th Street and Lorain Avenue.

The shooting happened just before noon on Tuesday. Authorities said the teen was shot in his side outside of the library's Eastman Branch and rushed to a local hospital for treatment where he later died.

Police do not have any suspects at this time.  The Cuyahoga County Medical Examiner's office identified the victim as 18-year-old Mustafa McWhorter of Cleveland.

A preliminary investigation reveals McWhorter was walking with a friend westbound on Lorain Avenue when they were confronted by someone in a red pickup truck who fired one shot that struck the 17-year-old.

Witnesses at the scene tell 5 On Your Side investigator Sarah Buduson that the victim was a known gang member who went by the nickname MJ.
