CLEVELAND - Elias Acevedo, the 49-year-old Cleveland man charged with the murder of 30-year-old Pamela Pemberton and 18-year-old Christina Adkins, appeared in court Wednesday.
He sat silently, looking at his hands, as his attorneys discussed his case with the prosecution and the judge.
Acevedo was arrested in June on a 1993 rape after DNA connected him to the case. Earlier this month, he was charged with nearly 300 more counts that included the murders of Pemberton and Adkins and the kidnapping and rapes of three other victims.
Due to the seriousness of the second indictment against Acevedo, his trial date was continued. The prosecutor noted during the hearing that, since the murders happened in 1994 and 1995, there is a decade of investigation records that both sides need to review.
Prosecution also requested that the rape victims' identities be protected by the courts, although the defense will have access to the information.
His next hearing is scheduled in two weeks, when the judge will set a trial date. He is currently being held on a $5 million bond.
