Man charged in Cleveland 12-year-old's shooting recently released from jail, also faces drug charge

CLEVELAND - A man arrested in connection with the shooting of a 12-year-old girl was released from Cuyahoga County Jail a few weeks before the shooting on Sunday.

Russell James, 20, was released May 3. He was indicted on a drug trafficking charge in May 2012.

James was arrested for felonious assault Tuesday in connection with the shooting.

Cleveland police said the shooting happened at about 7:30 p.m. Sunday at Walter A. Burks Park on Grantwood Avenue.

Investigators said two men began shooting at James and James fired back, with a bullet hit the girl in the chest.

The girl is in stable condition a Rainbow Babies & Children's Hospital.

A cousin told NewsChannel5 the girl never lost consciousness.
