Wedding Blog: NewsChannel5's Kristin Byrne to marry Q104's Average Joe this summer in Maine

CLEVELAND - 8/26/13

I got married!!

I am a married woman!! The wedding was BEAUTIFUL and PERFECT! We had about 80 or so guests attend. We ate lobster, laughed, danced, hugged, took pictures, and danced some more!!

We had about 14 guests or so RSVP and say they were coming, but didn't end up attending for some reason or another. I know...I know...that's A LOT. Don't worry, my guests ate all the lobster!!! There wasn't one left to spare :)

I would just like to say that all the stress is gone and I am happily enjoying being a newlywed. Joe and I went to the Dominican Republic for our honeymoon. We stayed for five days. I enjoyed delicious meals, the beach, the pool, cocktails, and sleeping in!! We rode bikes to the beach and even did some pilates while we were there.

Now, it's back to work. I did miss Cleveland, my home. Thank you for all your support/advice along the way. I'm hoping to continue this blog in one form or another. So keep checking back to see what my next adventure will be!! Pictures of the wedding coming soon!

The Calm Before the Storm

I can't believe five days from now I will be a married woman. So many people keep asking me, "Are you ready?"  or "Have you done everything?" Honestly, at this point, if it hasn't gotten done, it's probably not going to happen! I'm not nervous. I don't have cold feet. In fact, I wish we were married months ago! The waiting is agonizing! Most of my family members are in Maine already. They're waiting for us to get there!

I keep asking them to send me pictures of my nieces and my nephew. I think my sister is pretty annoyed with me. What can I say? I love my family and I'm so excited to see them!

Any last minute advice for this bride-to-be?

10 Days To Go

I cannot believe how time has ticked away! I am getting married in ten days! I have to pinch myself sometimes. The past few weeks have been crazy. My fiance and I are making sure everything is just right for the ceremony. We realize we can only do so much. People keep telling me, "Something will go wrong." I'm okay with that as long as it's not something major like forgetting to pick a relative up at the airport!

My sister is in Maine already helping my mom do last minute preparations. I don't know what I would do without their help! Plus, older sisters always know what they're doing, don't they?! They are in charge!

Wish me luck! I'm going to try and post again soon before I become Mrs. Krauss :)

Work Bridal Shower

My co-workers are going to throw me a bridal shower in three days! I am so excited! Not just because I'm going to get more gifts, people! I'm not that greedy! It's just nice to know people are excited for your big day. It's a day to celebrate the happy times with friends. We plan on doing it at Deagans restaurant in Lakewood, have you been? A big thank you in advance to all of those helping to plan the shower :)

Wedding Dress Still Fits

My mom was in town recently. She brought my wedding dress to my house to make sure it still fits, and it does!! In case you haven't read my previous blog posts, I'm wearing my mother's dress on my wedding day. She has it stored safely in Maine. My mother bought it in the Virgin Islands more than thirty years ago. It's very simple. I would say it's a bohemian/hippie style. I love it! I was a little nervous about it not fitting. I moved into a new house and have made a bunch of fast food stops lately. Not the best of ideas when you are about to get married. I don't plan on wearing a veil. I want to put a nice yellow flower in my hair. Don't you worry, I will be posting pictures of me in my dress on my wedding day on facebook and twitter. Make sure you follow me. Thank You Notes

I am totally stressing out about the thank you note situation! I hate them! I mean, I love getting them...the writing them part is what I loathe!! Since my wedding is out of state, I've received a lot of gifts so far. I want to do a really beautiful thank you note for my guests. I'm thinking a picture on a postcard, or some kind of creative note. I figured people are spending a good amount of money to come to my wedding and buy me a gift, they deserve a nice thank you card. The issue is, I want to wait for my wedding pictures! I'd like to send my guests a nice photo of my wedding day. Do you care about receiving a picture with your thank you note? Does it matter? Any input is welcome :)

Last Name Change

I plan on changing my last name when I get married. My fiance's last name is Krauss. Kristin Krauss. Has a nice ring to it, right?

It's funny how it's important for the full name to sound right. I mean, if Joe's last name was "Shiejoadholabdoljasidk" and no one could pronounce it, I would probably still marry him.....I just wouldn't take his last name!! It would be a pain trying to explain how to pronounce it to people ALL THE TIME!

I plan on keeping my on-air name, Kristin Byrne. However, my middle name, is by far, my favorite. It's "McKendry." I sometimes think I should change my work name to "Kristin McKendry." But, I worry I would forget and say "Kristin Byrne" on live TV!

See how complicated the name thing can be when you work in TV news?!! I've had other friends in the business keep their TV name, but then change it legally.

It is just a name. But, at the same time, a name is a big part of a person's identity. You want to like your name.

Finishing touches

Time is ticking! 38 days to go and I will be a married woman!! It's been pretty hectic lately planning for this major life event. I am currently trying to get a head count of the number of guests attending my summer wedding. Some invites either got lost in the mail, or some people have been a tad late sending in the RSVP's. So, that has been a little challenging.

On my to do list: 1. Purchase blueberry jam favors 2. Buy nice thank you cards for my guests 3. Get a final head count for the caterer 4. Try on my wedding dress to make sure it still fits (my mom has it with her in Maine but will bring it to Cleveland soon) 5. Figure out the rehearsal/ceremony details especially the music part of the ceremony. The list goes on!

I am getting VERY excited! In some ways, it feels like I have been waiting FOREVER. Then, other times I get nervous thinking I have so much to do and the date is fast approaching. Pray for this bride!

Out of State Drama

Don't get me wrong, I'm very excited to get married in Maine. But, planning an out of state wedding has come with its challenges. Recently, I've learned a lot of my friends can't make it to Maine. In fact, some of my fiance's family won't even be able to attend. We knew this would happen when we started planning our destination wedding. With the cost of flights and hotels nowadays, it's expensive!! Also, so many of my friends have young families. Traveling with babies or toddlers is tough!

Of course, I would love EVERYONE I invited to be there on my special day. But, I also understand that's just not reality. I have received phone calls and sweet notes on my RSVPs from friends letting me know they will be thinking about us on our wedding day. That is so thoughtful. I love each and every one of you!!

The Band

I wanted to share with you some of the songs our band, The Time Pilots, will play at our wedding! We found the Portland, Maine band online and we took a chance! We are confident they will rock it!

Flower Girls

I am so excited my twin nieces, Harper and Vera, will be my flower girls! They just turned one. They're not walking just yet, but I'm hoping in a couple of months, they will be able to walk down the aisle!!

I just found some cute t-shirts for them to wear at my rehearsal dinner. They have the phrase "Petal Power" on the front. My wedding date and their names are on the back of the shirt.

Since our wedding colors are yellow and navy, the girls are wearing yellow dresses. My bridesmaids are wearing navy. I can't wait to see how the pictures turn out!

Last minute preps

My wedding is about two months away, and I'm dealing with all the last minute drama! My musician canceled on me recently. Thankfully, I did end up finding someone who can take his place. Still on my to do list: pay final payments for caterer, the band and my wedding favors. I also need to order my flowers and finalize the music for my reception and the Bible readings for my ceremony.

66 days to go!!!

Nautical theme

Only 74 days until I walk down the aisle. As you can imagine, I have been so busy planning for this wedding! Sorry I didn't update last week. I recently moved too! Note to self...never decide to move and plan a wedding at the same time.

Today, I wanted to blog about my nautical wedding theme because it's really coming together! So far, I've found adorable nautical navy and yellow address labels, and my wedding invitations are tied together with twine. It gives you that summer boating season feeling. I hope my guests appreciate the little touches I made sure to include.

There are so many options it's hard to keep focused on my wedding budget. From champagne glasses, to napkins, favor bags, and guest books. They sell everything online and in these wedding magazines. I even saw fun cocktail straws! I haven't purchased any of these items yet. I'm trying to stay strong! I think it's fine to have some of them at a wedding, but I just feel if everything is labeled and your entire reception looks like it's out of a catalog, there's no character. Do you agree? Thoughts of a future bride. More updates soon!

Spending Money

Joe and I have spent quite a bit of money on this wedding so far. I think I need to get into the wedding business. The cost of anything wedding related is crazy!! All you have to do is sell something online and say it's for a wedding. I think they say the average cost of a wedding nowadays is $22,000. I read that somewhere. Well, my wedding is a lot cheaper than that, thank God! How do people afford these things without going into major debt?!

Honeymoon in the Dominican

Our honeymoon is booked! We decided to take a trip to Punta Cana in the Dominican Republic. My fiance and I wanted to go to Hawaii, but the flight from the east coast was way to long, plus it was very pricey. A flight from New England to Punta Cana is relatively quick and we'll be saving money by staying at an all inclusive resort. We won't have to worry about extra costs.

We could have picked Mexico, or one of the Virgin Islands, but we've both been there. We wanted to go somewhere new so we can explore. Although, to be honest, I think I'll be hanging out on the beach most of the time.

I've already purchased a cute one piece black bathing suit for our trip.  Cheers to the DR!

It's all about family

I'm back after a nice trip to see my family in Florida. My sister graduated from medical school, it was Mother's Day, and my twin nieces turned one. I have a lot to be grateful for this month and family is number one on my list.

Fittingly, family is my theme for my blog post today. My two sisters, my sister-in-law, and my best friend are my bridesmaids. They have been instrumental in helping me plan this wedding. They sent me ideas for invitations, shoes, bridesmaid dresses, and jewelry. They're always asking how they can help. The best part, is how excited and happy they are for me right now. Although my brothers and my father are very supportive, there's something to be said about girl power!

Thank you to my female family members and friends. The countdown to Krauss wedding...95 days to go!

I want to dedicate this blog post to my future husband, Joe Krauss. He has been so patient with me these last few months and has helped out however he can with wedding planning. I am a lucky girl. I know a lot of men don't know what to do or how to help. Maybe they do, they just don't want to! Joe isn't like that. He likes being a part of the planning, giving his opinions on colors, the cake, the men's suits, etc. It's nice to have a partner throughout this entire process. I love you babe!

The Officiant

I can't wait for people to meet the officiant at our wedding, Father Phil Tracy. He married my sister and my brother :) He's funny, creative and very thoughtful. Plus, he's Irish! I love my fellow Irish folks. I remember at my sister's wedding he made several jokes and the wedding guests absolutely loved him. That's why when Joe and I got engaged, he was the first person I thought of...I needed to have Father Phil marry us. Father Phil has moved to a different parish. He's still in Maine, but has to travel a ways to get to our church. I'm so grateful he's willing to do that for us.

The gifts are arriving...

I'm already receiving gifts for my wedding. As you can see in this picture, Joe and I now have a salad spinner and a vegetable pan for a grill. Two items we have NOT been able to live without! Just kidding, but they are two items we've wanted! Thanks to our friend, RJ and his lovely wife Liz :)

Joe's aunt sent us an awesome new toaster too. I love to cook so I registered for a bunch of new kitchen utensils and pots and pans. I also registered for new furniture items, hoping maybe we'll get a nice new bookcase or a night stand. I kind of felt guilty about registering for the larger gifts, but a friend told me sometimes guests like to go in as a group and buy a more expensive wedding present.

Joe and I were contemplating registering for a "honey fund" where people could contribute money towards our honeymoon, or could purchase items like a massage or a dinner for the honeymoon.

We ended up deciding against that idea because I wanted new kitchen appliances! But, I still think it's a cool concept.

Any must have items we should register for? There's still time!

The shoes are here...

I've been searching for the perfect pair of wedding heels and I'm excited to announce, the Universe brought them to me! Or, the internet! Either way, they are fabulous! I wanted a yellow heel. My wedding colors are navy and yellow and my bridesmaids are wearing yellow heels.

These are about 2.5 inches high and each shoe has a big red heart on the sole. During my wedding dance, I plan on doing a couple of high kicks so everyone can see the hearts.

I forgot the brand of the shoe. It's a brand that's not very popular, but I don't care. It's the right shade of yellow and it has hearts...what more can I ask for?!

Now, I just need to break them in. If you see me around town wearing yellow heels, you'll know why!

My Flower Girls

These adorable twins are my flower girls. My nieces, Vera and Harper, will be wearing adorable yellow dresses. I was thinking it would be cute to add a hair band or a little navy blue bow.

They'll be one year old in May, so hopefully they'll be walking in time for my August wedding. If not, I plan on putting them in a wagon and having someone pull them down the aisle. How cute!

My 2-year-old nephew, William, will be my ring bearer. I have a feeling he will run down the aisle. I'll post some funny pictures of him next! Stay tuned!

Something Borrowed

I'm still putting together my final look for my wedding day. I have the dress. Remember, I'm wearing my mother's bohemian style dress. I have the make up and I know the hair style I want for my summer wedding. I'm thinking of just wearing my short hair straight will work best. The veil you see in this photo, is perfect for the simple and classy dress. Don't get too excited, my fiance WILL NOT be wearing it! In all honesty, he doesn't look too bad!

The veil falls under the "something borrowed" category. It's my sister-in-law's veil! She looked beautiful on her wedding day.

The dress falls under the "something old" category. Now I just need "something blue" and "something new."

Sheesh! I plan on buying some cute yellow wedding shoes for "something new." Any ideas for "something blue?" I sound like a Dr. Suess book!

Special Delivery

The wait is over, my wedding invitations have arrived! I ordered these on and I couldn't be happier with the outcome. The designer I worked with was great at making the changes I requested. I chose a nautical theme with my colors navy and yellow :) I wanted to include travel information as well considering this is an out of state wedding and people might have some difficulty finding the small church where we're getting married.

Out of all the planning I've done so far, the invitations caused the most stress! I realize people just throw them out after the wedding, but I wanted something special. I wanted people to be excited about coming to Maine! I ended up paying several hundred for the invites, but for me, it was worth it.

A co-worker just told me there are great deals for invites at Hobby Lobby. So, if you're planning a wedding on a budget, that might be a good option to explore.

I plan on sending out the invites in a couple of months. I can't wait to hear what my guests think of them!

In Sickness and In Health

As many of you know, I just had wisdom tooth surgery. I say tooth, because I just had one tooth removed! That was enough for me!! Why am I writing about this in my WEWS wedding blog, you ask? The theme of today's blog is, "In Sickness and In Health." Time for me to dote on my future husband.

My fiance, Joe, took care of me this past weekend. I was in bed for most of it, looking like a chipmunk. He got me ice packs, pain medication, soups, and fashion magazines. He asked me if I needed anything else. He even took the dog out.

I realize other people deal with illnesses far worse than a tooth being pulled, but his actions proved to me, he'll take care of me when I need him. I'm ready to say those vows! By the way, didn't you get the memo? The chipmunk look is in this year!

I plan on having lobster at my wedding reception! I'm getting married in Maine. I think guests expect it! Nonetheless, I'm so excited to see how people react to the crustaceans. I just wanted to use the word crustaceans in a sentence! Good times.

In all seriousness, my sister served lobster at her wedding reception. It was a huge hit! People were laughing as they struggled to figure out how to eat them. Pieces of lobster meat went flying into the air. It's a great bonding experience. The Maine natives will have to help out my out of town guests when they just can't seem to figure out how to properly eat the things :)

In case you missed it, I'm getting married in Maine because my father is from Waterville. Growing up, we would visit Maine during summers. I love it there!

Stay tuned for fun lobster eating pictures from our wedding. Have a crustacean kind of day. Whatever that means!

Loving Pinterest

I know I'm very late to the Pinterest party, but I am showing up now!! My older sister, Katy, told me I had to get an account because there are so many creative wedding ideas and fun pictures for people planning to get married. She was right, I'm hooked. Here are some cool concepts I found on Pinterest that I want to recreate for my special day:

1.) I love the idea of buying mason jars, cutting glow sticks, and pouring the liquid inside the jar to make a pretty glowing light. Perfect for my evening reception outside :)

2.) Another idea I saw, is buying a bunch of flip flops for the ladies to change into when their feet hurt from dancing. Of course, I would like to get them in my wedding colors -- navy and yellow!

3.) Sending a wedding invite to Mickey and Minnie Mouse. In return, the Disney stars will send you a photo of them addressed to you and your groom.

4.) Taking wedding photos holding a "Thank You" sign with your groom. You can then use those for your thank you cards after the wedding.

5.) A S'more bar/table at your wedding. So people can take what they need and head to the campfire.

Hope you like these ideas as much as I do!

The Church

Joe and I are getting married at St. Helena Church in Belgrade Lakes, Maine. It's the same church where my older brother and sister tied the knot! Plus, the same priest is marrying us! Younger siblings are copy cats. Hey, if they make a good decision, I'm going to follow in their footsteps.

The church is gorgeous. It's small and very intimate. It's pretty cool that we have some family history there now. The only issue is, there's no center aisle. You heard right. That means as I walk to meet Joe, I will be walking along the side of the pews. Honestly, that's ok with me. It makes the groom and bride's side of the family mingle when they sit next to one another.

I am still in the process of selecting music and putting together a ceremony program. Time is ticking. Only 158 days to go!!

My Mother's Wedding Dress

So, it's no secret. On my wedding day, I'm wearing my mother's wedding dress. The picture you see here is not the dress. That's one I bought at Goodwill for my bachelorette party. I don't want to post a picture of my real dress because Joe hasn't seen it yet. What I can tell you is that it is a bohemian style Mexican dress. My mother bought it in St. Croix some thirty-four years ago!! She told me she bought it for about $100! What a steal. I hear about women who spend thousands of dollars on their dress, so this saving me some major money. Celebrate it!

Bachelorette Party

Time to party bachelorette style! I already did as a matter of fact! Since my wedding is taking place out of state in Maine, I decided to get together with my sister and some of my closest friends in Miami, Florida. In case you didn't know, I'm originally from Miami. A couple of months ago, I took a trip down south to get the party started on a Saturday night! (that was cheesy)

My two sisters, Katy and Elizabeth, went all out in planning my bachelorette party. They decided to do an 80's style theme, so they asked all the ladies to head to Goodwill and purchase a poofy, tacky, 80's prom dress to wear. As you can tell in the pictures, they did!! We went out to some bars in Coconut Grove and then went to South Beach. Don't worry, we didn't get too crazy. My sisters made me do silly things like sing stupid songs in front of random people. It was embarrassing, but hilarious. We gave each other 80's names like Tiffany, Vicki, Lisa, Amber, you get the idea. I think my name was Stacy.

Overall, it was a night of dancing and a lot of laughter. Stacy is now officially ready to get married :)

Am I a Bridezilla?

I've been doing most of the work planning for my summer wedding. I'm talking the bridesmaid dresses, working with the priest, wedding invitations, wedding website, registering for gifts, getting the photographer and caterer, you get the idea! But in all honesty, my fiance is more than willing to help. In fact, he asks me often how he can help. I always respond by saying "don't worry about it" or "I've got it under control."

"Control" being the key word here. Ladies, why do we do this to ourselves?! I need to ask for help in the six months leading up to the special day. I should put that sentence on a notepad and paste it to my bathroom mirror. Now that I think of it, if Joe helps now and doesn't do exactly the plan, there's still time to fix it. I sound like a Bridezilla. I'm not. I promise. Mu ha hahahahaa

Suit Drama

We're trying to find the perfect suit for the groomsmen to wear on our wedding day, but it's been VERY difficult. I'm looking for a khaki or navy color for the guys to wear. The cost is the issue. The suits are so expensive! I'm talking in the area of $300 dollars. Joe and I don't want to ask the groomsmen to spend that amount of money. There's always the renting a tuxedo route, but I don't think a tux would work for a summer wedding. The guys would be all sweaty and gross! Plus, do they even have tuxedos in khaki? If anyone has any suggestions, I obviously need help in this area! Why am I doing this work, anyway? Don't you think Joe should tackle this one? Fortunately, the bridesmaids dresses are ready to go. I found beautiful navy dresses for my girls. Who hoo!! In the meantime, I'll just pray for a massive men's suit sale :)

Our Story

Joe and I met in Green Bay, Wisconsin. I was working as a reporter in Green Bay and he was working as a radio DJ there.

Our mutual friend, Brooke Deviley, held an event at her hotel, Cambria Suites. She met Joe and thought he was funny and might be a good match for me.

She texted me and told me we both had a dog named Sadie. She texted Joe the same thing. We both (sort of) thought that was (kind of) interesting, but shrugged and moved on with life, never thinking much about it.

Fast forward a couple of weeks. I was out with my girlfriends, Michelle and Brooke, and Brooke decided to text Joe to come out and join us.

He did! When he arrived to Jimmy Seas (the bar where we were) he proceeded to chat with all my lady friends, but not me (how rude)!

He eventually did start pursuing me. He claims to this day that was his "game plan to get the girl." It worked!

We exchanged numbers, met for drinks soon after, and the rest is history!
