Ashtabula County Sheriff's Department is investigating a string of burglaries hitting residents in Ashtabula Township.

Officers received a call at 2 a.m. on Wednesday after a neighbor reported hearing gunshots.

A resident of a home on Carterland Drive explained he was downstairs in his home when he heard footsteps coming from upstairs.

He grabbed his 9mm pistol and began making his way upstairs. When he reached the top of the stairs and made his way towards his living room, he saw the front door was open and an unknown man was in the house.

The suspect was walking towards the back door and started running.

The resident chased him out of the house, firing several warning shots into the air in an attempt to scare him off.

The suspect fled on foot to the east and then headed south to a large open field.

Deputies followed the trail with a K9 officer, which ultimately led to a long ATV trail along the field.

The suspect ran 200 yards where the K9 lost the suspect's scent.

Authorities believe the suspect picked up from that point or fled on an ATV.
