More than $70,000 were paid in fines by 289 people and wrongfully jailed others after Cleveland law officials changed misdemeanor traffic ordinances to match the state code, but neglected to also update the penalties for those crimes, according to city's municipal court.

The numbers were released Thursday and showed of the 9,407 people affected — 63 were sentenced to jail and 289 paid fines totaling $71,927.

Mayor Frank Jackson held a press conference last month about the issue and said five people had been wrongfully imprisoned at the time.
