A 72-year-old man is in critical condition after he was mauled by a dog while he was babysitting his 2-year-old grandchild, according to authorities.

The attack happened on Oct. 26 on the 52960 block of State Route 18 in Brighton Township.

Police described the residence as a duplex with a door separating the two living quarters.

Authorities said the man and his wife were watching the toddler in the east end of the home while several dogs were confined to the other side of the duplex.

At some point, the man mistakenly walked into the other unit and was attacked by one of the dogs.  Authorities said the man's wife was also injured.

An Ohio State Highway Patrol Trooper responded and fired three shots, killing the dog.

The man was flown to MetroHealth Medical Center and is currently listed in critical condition.

His wife was taken to Mercy Allen Hospital in Oberlin for puncture wounds, treated and released.

Authorities said the remaining dogs in the duplex were determined to not be a threat to the family.
