Former teacher's assistant at Akron middle school sentenced to life in prison for rape

AKRON, Ohio - D'Jaun Shabazz Shields, 40 of Akron, pleaded guilty in the middle of his trial for raping two young girls in 2011 and 2012 on Wednesday.

Shields was on trial for rape of a child under 13, a first degree felony, and four counts of gross sexual imposition which is a third degree felony, said Summit County Prosecutor Sherri Bevan Walsh.

At the time of Shields's arrest, he was a teacher's assistant at Hyre Middle School, where he worked with autistic children.

Neither victims were students of the school.

Visiting Judge Robert Brown immediately sentenced Shields to life in prison and deemed him a Tier III sex offender.

Shields will be eligible for parole after serving 10 years in prison.
