Video Vault: Boy George, Culture Club at the Richfield Coliseum in 1984

RICHFIELD, Ohio - Hotter than hot doesn’t begin to describe the popularity of Boy George and Culture Club as they played the Richfield Coliseum on April 9, 1984.

The craze surrounding Boy George included people, men and women, dressing up like the androgynously-styled entertainer.

WEWS reporter Paul Orlousky and yours truly were assigned to cover the concert, which included going backstage to interview Boy George.

We were permitted to shoot one song, “Take Control”, which I recall was the first number performed.

Our video player contains 50 seconds of the song and a story we did for our 11 p.m. newscast.

“It’s people from the press that say you’re weird, I mean normal people in the streets, they make up their own minds,” the then-22-year-old singer tells us.

In his story, Orlousky pokes fun at some of the fans at the concert, including running and re-running a sound bite from a young lady who says, “I think the same way he does, about being yourself”.

One fan interviewed says, “Anything weird is in and Boy George is weird so he’s in”.

Boy George sold out the Coliseum in 1984 and continues his singer career nearly 30 years later.
