Tremont residents report another string of break-ins and thefts

CLEVELAND, Ohio - Neighbors in Tremont are taking action after yet another string of thefts target their up-and-coming neighborhood.

One body shop owner said he's had to fix many shattered car windows that were broken into in the area.

Most recently, a homeowner said he is hoping his security camera will help catch the two burglars, who are still on the loose.

It was not just a simple break in. Ron Copfer, who lives in Tremont, described how the two burglars circled his house, even ringing the doorbell at around 10 a.m. on Wednesday.

Then, 24 hours later, they did the same thing, except the second time, they had a crow bar and broke through his garage door.

“Yesterday, we got home about 6 o'clock at night, I noticed that the garage door was busted open,” he said. “All of our bikes and the power washer tools were missing.”

Copfer says he was in shock. These burglars were not deterred, despite the fact that he secured his house and installed a security system. He even has security stickers and signs in front of his house.

“To see when somebody's walked on your property and cause damage by busting the door open and taking your possessions,” he said.

While Copfer said he tried to remain calm, his girlfriend took matters into her own hands.

“My girlfriend Jessica decided she had enough, she got in the car and started driving around the neighborhood and actually found the bike,” he said.

Copfer said she found one of her bikes and called police. They ended up arresting the man who was riding it.

“He didn't steal the bike, but he was in possession of her bike,” he said.

One bike was found, but two are still missing, along with their power tools.

The Tremont Crime Watch Facebook page is alerting residents to be on the lookout.

In addition to this case, numerous neighbors say another break-in happened at the parking lot at Grumpy's Cafe a few weeks ago.

Back in June, numerous businesses on Cleveland’s Westside were also targeted.

Right now, Cleveland Police are still looking for the two burglars. Meanwhile, the man who was caught with the bike is facing charges for receiving stolen property.
