Breeders' Cup Racing Today

Breeders' Cup at Santa Anita

Arcadia, California - For the last three decades the Breeders' Cup has taken place at various tracks across the country.  This weekend Santa Anita is host once again to the $27 million event which is the World Series for Thoroughbred racing.

The Breeders' Cup is the European's against the American's and the foreign starters that come here have provided some of the biggest challenges on the our tracks with multiple winners.  Foreign runner Goldikova claimed the Mile for three years in a row from 2008-2010.

The Breeders' Cup Classic became legendary at Santa Anita when Zenyatta came up the stretch with an unprecedented late run becoming the first female to claim the trophy over the boys.

In 1993 the Breeders' Cup Classic race gave a payout of $269.20 for a $2 win wager when forgotten Arcangues hit the board out of nowhere.  The record for that wager still stands.

There are plenty of races today with horses who have similar histories such as Zenyatta and Goldikova who will try to hold on to their titles.  Last year's Breeders' Cup winner, Fort Larned, returns to defend his name in the Classic.

The Breeders' Cup will feature 9 races today with 3 undercard races.   The Breeders' Cup races are compiled with horses who have won on their "home track" with favorite contenders coming from Japan, Canada and Europe.  For those that have traveled internationally it is best to look at those that have arrived well in advance of their scheduled race.  While the Japanese contenders tend to do well in Europe, they have not faired well on the U.S. tracks.  That may likely change in the future, but for today keep your eyes on the British and American horses.
