Olga Melin, Owner of Itsmyluckyday, wears lucky hat to the Kentucky Derby

Louisville, KY - Olga Melin is as excited as any other horse owner would be about having an entry in Saturday's Kentucky Derby.

Melin, along with her husband Dave, and Laurie Plesa, trainer Eddie Plesa's wife, who are all owners of Itsmyluckyday talked about their colt, why he's so special and why they are not that disappointed with their loss in the Florida Derby.

They were hoping for a post position somewhere in the middle and they got it.  Post No. 12.  They love the way their colt has been training, he has been eating well and has gotten bigger since the Florida Derby.  He'll enter the Derby well rested.

Itsmyluckyday was enjoying having all the company around him at the stable; this colt has a nice temperament.

Itsmyluckyday showed a lot of promise as a Juvenile with three wins to his credit, but his major accomplishment came in the Holy Bull in January of this year by outrunning the Todd Pletcher trained undefeated Shanghai Bobby.

Laurie Plesa explained, "It was little disappointing to take the loss in the Florida Derby but we were all okay with it.  We weren't the favorite any longer but the main goal was to keep the horse healthy and get to the Kentucky Derby.  The Derby was always our long-term plan.  Now we are here."

Olga Melin explained that the Kentucky Derby was always the dream she shared with her husband.  Dave Melin bought his wife a hat many years ago as a gift and he told her, "If we ever get a horse that will run in the Kentucky Derby this will be the hat that you can wear on that day."

Now that day has arrived.  Olga told me that she has kept the hat preserved with hope of what the future would bring and what that Derby Day would be like for their family.  She's about to find out.

The hat, as worn by Olga Melin in the above photo, is black with a flowered medallion and a jockey on it.  It will probably be one of the many unique hats that people will be sporting on Saturday.

As for the race, they are looking forward to it.  They aren't worried about Orb having beat them in the Florida Derby and now being listed as the morning line favorite.  They believe Itsmyluckyday has transitioned well to the Churchill track.
