LOUISVILLE, Ky. - The sister race to the Kentucky Derby, the $1 million Longines Kentucky Oaks will take place at Churchill Downs Friday and post time is scheduled for 5:50 p.m. EDT
The 1-1/8 mile race is the most lucrative for 3-year-old fillies and is the 11th race on a 12-race card.
The Oaks is a competition for female thoroughbreds, making it ladies day at the track.
On Tuesday, trainer Steve Asmussen's Untapable drew the outside position for today's race. No horse in the Kentucky Oaks has won from the number 13 starting gate in 13 tries.
Today the Oaks heavy favorite will try to break that long-standing statistic from the far outside post. As luck would have it Rosie Napravnik will be breaking from the dreaded inside post in Saturday's Kentucky Derby on board Vicar's In Trouble.
Despite the poor post position, Untapable is a standout in today's field with a morning line of 4/5. Jockey Rosie Napravnik will have to break early to cut across the field to overcome the far outside position. Napravnik won the Kentucky Oaks in 2012 onboard Believe You Can.
Rosalind will break from post 4 and has had favorable workouts this week. She is trained by Kenny McPeek and heads into today's race off a seventh-length victory . This horse is a closer and may be stalking the field. Jockey Joel Rosario has the mount.
Fashion Plate will be breaking as the early speed in the field from post 7. She won her last three starts and will have jockey Gary Stevens on board. I was able to see the filly yesterday and she looks in top form.
I'm keeping my eyes on Bob Baffert's trained Ria Antonia who will break from post 2 with Mike Smith on board. She won the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies after She's A Tiger was disqualified in the field. Owner Ron Paulucci, of Loooch Racing Stables, resides in Stow, Ohio but splits his time between Northeast Ohio and Las Vegas.
The Kentucky Oaks from the inside post out is as follows:
