State to fill-in mine under State Route 2 near Lake Erie

PORT CLINTON, Ohio - Ohio's transportation department plans to fill-in an abandoned mine that runs under a busy highway along the western side of Lake Erie.

The state says the $20 million project near Port Clinton will prevent the old tunnel from the possibility of a collapse.

The gypsum mine was abandoned in the 1970s.

It sits near the Port Clinton airport under State Route 2, a busy highway that takes summer tourists to the Lake Erie islands and Cedar Point amusement park.

The Blade newspaper in Toledo reports the work will require lane closings on the highway for close to two years. But the state says there won't be lane closings in the busy summer travel season
