Police: Mother, daughter killed in Akron house fire

AKRON, Ohio - Two people have died following an early morning house fire on the north side of Akron.

Akron police tell NewsChannel 5 the deadly fire happened at a home along the 500 block of Oxford Avenue near East York Street around 2:24 a.m. Firefighters said they made an aggressive attack to extinguish the blaze the quickly.

Police said the two dead are a mother and daughter. One of the victims was 52 years old and the other 28 years old. Akron Fire Captain Al Bragg does not believe there was anyone else inside the home when the fire broke out. The two victims were found dead in the bedrooms.

Firefighters said the blaze started somewhere on the first floor of the home and spread to the basement and the second floor.

The fire captain told NewsChannel5 no working smoke detectors were found in the home.

Arson and Fire Investigators will be back out at the scene Thursday afternoon.

The home was valued at $80,000.

Fire damages were estimated around $40,000 to the home and an additional $20,000 in contents.

Akron fire said there were no obvious signs of foul play.
