Cleveland settles police lawsuit for $600,000

CLEVELAND - The city of Cleveland is paying $600,000 to a man who claimed police officers attacked him after a chase in 2011.

An attorney for Edward Henderson told The Plain Dealer Wednesday that the settlement also includes policy changes by the agency.

A spokeswoman for the city confirmed the settlement, but she said it doesn't include admission of wrongdoing by officers.

The 43-year-old Henderson claimed in a lawsuit that he was attacked by several officers after he crashed his van. He claimed he was handcuffed, held down by officers and kicked and kneed in the head. He suffered a detached retina and broken eye socket.

Henderson is serving a three-year prison sentence for assaulting an officer as a result of the chase. Charges against the officers were later dismissed.
