Estranged husband of murdered Cleveland Clinic nurse Aliza Sherman hires prominent attorney

CLEVELAND - The estranged husband of the Cleveland Clinic nurse who was murdered in downtown Cleveland earlier this year has hired a prominent attorney to represent him.

Niki Schwartz confirmed to NewsChannel5 Friday that he is representing Dr. Sanford Sherman, but would not say why he has been retained or whether he expects developments in the case.

The murder of his estranged wife, 53-year-old Aliza Sherman, occurred March 24 near the Galleria at Erieview Mall. Cleveland police released a surveillance image of the person they believe killed the Beachwood woman, but the case remains unsolved.

The Cuyahoga County Medical Examiner's Office said Sherman was stabbed to death.

Friends said Sherman, who was in the middle of a divorce, was downtown for a meeting with her lawyer on the day of her death.

Cleveland Police Chief McGrath told NewsChannel5 in March that investigators believe Sherman was targeted, and the public is not in immediate danger.

Anyone with information should call the homicide unit at 216-623-5464 or Crime Stoppers at 216-252-7463. Tips via text message can be sent by texting "TIP657" to 274637.

Schwartz has been involved in high-profile cases, such as the Cuyahoga County federal corruption probe, representing businessman Steven Pumper.
