An officer was shot and killed in Trumbull County over the weekend while responding to a domestic situation.

Officer Justin Leo, 31, of the Girard Police Department was shot by a Jason Marble just after 10 p.m. Saturday in the 400 block of Indiana Avenue in Girard, Ohio.

Girard Police say officers responded to Indiana Avenue to investigate a domestic dispute. Police say they spoke briefly with the suspect as they approached the home. That’s when Marble pulled out a gun and shot Officer Leo.

A second officer on the scene returned fire, killing the suspect. The Trumbull County Coroner's Office confirmed the suspect's identity. An autopsy has not yet been completed.

Officer Leo was transported to a hospital in Youngstown, where he later died. He was a five-year veteran of the Girard Police Department.

Officers add that Marble had several guns inside the home and had been drinking all day.

The Trumbull County Homicide Task Force and the Bureau of Criminal Investigation are assisting Girard Police Department with the investigation.

The findings will be turned over to the Trumbull County Prosecutor’s Office for review.
