CLEVELAND - A suspect in the 1984 murder of 14-year-old Gloria Pointer served 15 years in prison for a 1985 rape and received probation in a prior drug case allowing him to roam Cleveland streets.
Police have not released the name of the suspect and no charges have been filed.
But a review of court records found the 58-year-old suspect pleaded guilty in a 1985 rape case -- just a year after Pointer's body was found.
He was released from prison in 2000 and despite authorities arguing that he should be labeled a sexual predator, the courts found insufficient evidence and labeled him a sexually-oriented offender instead.
Court records show he has a long criminal history dating back to 1981, including drugs and concealed weapon charges.
In fact, in 1983, he pleaded guilty to drug abuse but instead of prison he received probation, allowing him to roam Cleveland streets.
Just a year and a half later, the body of 14-year-old Gloria Pointer was found in early December 1984.
