Car went over cliff into beach in Ashtabula, 5 people hospitalized

ASHTABULA, Ohio - Five people were hospitalized following a single-car accident in Ashtabula where a car went over a cliff into the water.

The wreck happened on Walnut Boulevard at Union Avenue around 3:05 a.m. Saturday.

Ohio State Highway Troopers said the driver of a 1999 Honda Civic failed to yield at a stop sign and drove through a residential lawn, over a cliff into a private beach near Lake Erie.

Five people, who are all in their 20s, were riding in the vehicle.

Paramedics responded to the scene, rescued the victims and then transported them to Ashtabula County Medical Center by ambulance.

Troopers said Saturday that Tyler Ashley of Ashtabula, Benjamin Ashcroft of North Kingsville, Shawn Ryder of Ashtabula and Brandyn Frampton of Kingsville were listed in stable condition. The fifth victim, Katrina Welton of Ashtabula, was listed in critical condition.

As of Sunday evening, Ashtabula County Medical Center officials said Ashley and Ryder were transferred to Hillcrest Hospital, and Welton was transferred to MetroHealth Medical Center. Ashcroft and Frampton were treated and released.

The accident remains under investigation.
