2 bodies discovered in burning car in East Cleveland

Investigators search Bedford home in connection

EAST CLEVELAND - East Cleveland police said they discovered two bodies inside a burning car Wednesday morning.

The car was located on Savannah Avenue near Allegheny Avenue in East Cleveland.

Investigators on scene confirmed the car is a silver Buick with New York plates. The car was rented by a man from Bedford.

Members of the Ohio Fire Marshal's Office were called to the scene.

The badly-burned bodies were located in the back seat of the car, police said. The identities of the victims have not been released at this time. Police say the remains are of a man and woman.

Police said they are investigating this as a homicide. Authorities believe the car was brought to the empty lot on Savannah Avenue next to an abandoned home Wednesday morning.

"We spoke to several neighbors on the street," said Commander Scott Gardner of the East Cleveland Police Department. "They only thing they heard prior to calling us was a couple of pops from the fire and a larger explosion as they describe it.  Nobody's indicating they heard any other arguments, noises, crashes, anything prior."

No cause has yet been determined.

Investigators spent much of the afternoon and early evening searching the Gould Avenue home of the man who rented that car. Police say he hasn't been heard from all day.

Investigators say they did find evidence of a struggle inside the house.  Neighbors told police they smelled gasoline coming from the brick home as well.

Police say the homeowner is known to law enforcement, but would not elaborate.
