CLEVELAND - Elias Acevedo, the 49-year-old Cleveland man charged with the murder of 30-year-old Pamela Pemberton and 18-year-old Christina Adkins, pleaded not guilty to the nearly 300 counts against him Monday morning.
He's being held on the medical floor of the Cuyahoga County Jail, his attorney told NewsChannel5 reporter Tracy Carloss.
The judge set bond at $5 million dollars, one million for each victim. The judge announced in court the indictment, which identified the second victim as a "Jane Doe", will now be changed to say Christina Adkins.
Adkins' mother and family members were in courtroom for Monday's proceedings.
Prosecutors filed the indictment last week.
Acevedo has been charged with 293 counts.
He's also been charged with the rape and kidnapping of two girls when they were as young as 8 and 11 and, a few months ago, was charged in a 1993 rape case.
In all, Acevedo faces four counts of aggravated murder, 173 counts of rape, 115 counts of kidnapping and one count of gross sexual imposition; plus two counts of rape and one of kidnapping from the 1993 case.
He's been held in Cuyahoga County Jail since June after DNA connected him to a 1993 case.
Authorities in Cleveland have been looking into the disappearances of women in the city following the escape of three women held captive for a decade in a home owned by Ariel Castro.
