1 pedestrian killed, another injured after being struck by vehicle outside Mentor Walmart

An elderly woman driving a vehicle struck two pedestrians outside the Walmart in Mentor just after noon Monday. One of the pedestrians went into cardiac arrest and died at the hospital.

The elderly woman was driving a late-model Chevrolet when she struck the two pedestrians outside the Walmart at 9303 Mentor Avenue, according to a news release from the City of Mentor.

One of the pedestrians went into full cardiac arrest on scene, authorities said. The pedestrian was taken to Tripoint Medical Center where she succumbed to her injuries.

The other pedestrian, a wheelchair-bound employee, was taken to Lake West with minor injuries, the release states. The driver was taken to Tripoint for a minor injury and medical evaluation.

The building sustained minor damage, but will remain open, officials said.

The name of the pedestrian who died is being withheld until the family is notified.

The incident is being investigated by the Crash Reconstruction Unit, and the investigation will be reviewed for any applicable charges once it is complete, authorities said.
