Lake County Jail population has tripled, female inmates up by 1,000 percent

PAINESVILLE, Ohio - The number of prisoners incarcerated in the Lake County Jail is on the rise.

The Lake County Sheriff's Office said in a Facebook post that the jail, which was built to house 353 prisoners, now has 407 total inmates, 318 men and 80 women.

They said when the jail opened in 1990 there were 120 inmates, nine of whom were women.

Over the course of the past 20 years, the prison's overall population has more than tripled and there has been a 1,000 percent rise in the amount of women.
