Lightning strike catches roof on fire at Louisville Middle School in Stark County

LOUISVILLE, Ohio - Louisville Middle School was evacuated after a lightning strike caught the roof on fire, authorities say.

More than 800 students and staff inside the South Chapel Road school were safely evacuated around 2:30 p.m., the high school's principal Steve Milano said. Most were relocated to Louisville High School.

Canton and Plain Township fire departments were called in to help extinguish the flames. Because the fire was high up, it took firefighters a half hour to reach the flames.

The fire was above a computer lab and contained to the roof. The classroom suffered water damage as a result.

The city manager said the fire was out just after 3:30 p.m.

Later in the day, restoration crews were able to get into the building and turn on the power. The school will be open on Thursday.
