A Sheffield Lake family has come forward to fight for better tracking of sex offenders listed in county sex offender registries.
News 5 will not report the families last name, but they believe changes are needed, after police said their 14-year-old daughter was sexually assaulted by 41-year-old Dennis Snodgrass in 2015.
According to court records, Snodgrass pleaded guilty to gross sexual imposition and failing to register as a sex offender in Lorain County Court on March 9.
But the victim, and her father, told News 5 their case could have been avoided if Snodgrass would have been monitored more carefully.
According to police, Snodgrass was listed in the Cuyahoga County sex offender registry on a 2008 gross sexual imposition conviction, but moved to Sheffield Lake and Lorain County without accurately reporting it to his Cuyahoga County community control officer.
Police report Snodgrass also failed to register with Lorain County.
The family said no one in their Sheffield Lake neighborhood was aware Snodgrass was a registered sex offender before the attack on their daughter.
The family told News 5 more checks, and more communication between county police agencies is needed to insure the whereabouts of registered sex offenders.
"If the counties can just work together, especially when it comes to sex offenders and repeat offenders," said the father of the victim.
"It's so important, I would've thought everyone would be connected together, but this is not the case."
News 5 first reported on this case in Feb. 2017, and at the time Snodgrass maintained his innocence.
Snodgrass has now been sentenced to two years in jail, without out the possibility of early release, but the family believes Snodgrass should have been given a tougher sentence.
"He only gets two years but I get a life sentence," said the victim.
"It's like a slap in the face, cause it's like, what did I do to deserve this?"
