Kentucky State Police say the fatal roadside shooting of a local police officer was premeditated and are asking for the public's help in finding suspects.
Authorities say 33-year-old Bardstown Officer Jason Ellis was shot multiple times with a shotgun after he got out of his cruiser to pick up debris on Bluegrass Parkway in Nelson County. Ellis was in uniform and was driving home.
Investigators have determined the shooting was an ambush and are trying to determine if Ellis was the target, or whether he was the first person to pick up the debris.
Anyone that may have seen something suspicious in the days leading up to the shooting is asked to contact Kentucky State Police. A reward is being offered..
Ellis is survived by a wife and two children. Funeral services are scheduled for this Wednesday and Thursday in Bardstown.
According to the University of the Cumberlands website, Ellis was a star baseball player when he attended the school and signed with the Cincinnati Reds minor league program, playing from 2002 to 2005.
