Two days of services for former Ohio Governor John J. Gilligan

CINCINNATI - A mass followed by a visitation at the National Underground Railroad Freedom Center in Cincinnati began the two days of memorial services for former Ohio governor and congressman John J. Gilligan.

The Cincinnati Enquirer ( ) reports that mourners in the pews and at the lectern on Wednesday noted how much the 92-year-old political leader cared about others. The service was attended by several family members including his daughter U.S. Secretary of Health and Human Services Kathleen Sebelius.

Gilligan will be honored Thursday at the Ohio Statehouse.

His body has been donated to the University of Cincinnati Medical Center.

The Democrat was governor from 1971 to 1975. He also served in the U.S. House, on Cincinnati city council and the city's School Board.

He died at home Aug. 26.
