Kentucky Derby Early Wagering Pool Opens Today

Verrazano - Derby Favorite

CLEVELAND - The Kentucky Derby final wagering pool opens today at Noon and will run through Sunday, March 24 th.

There are 23 potential runners to choose from including the mutual field listed as number 24.

Verrazano leads the wagering with odds of 7-2, followed by the mutual field.  This is the first time in years that the mutual betting field will not close as the favorite.

Verrazano has three wins to his credit having closed three lengths out for the win in the Tampa Bay Derby (G2) on March 13 th.

It's My Lucky Day, Orb and Vyjack are listed with the next highest odds in the field at 10-1, followed by Flashback at 12-1.

It's My Lucky Day is trained by Edward Plesa, won his last two times out including the Holy Bull (G3) at Gulfstream Park in January.

Orb is trained by Shug McGaughey, has 50 points and a strong pedigree for distance.

Vyjack has 50 points, is trained by Rudy Rodriguez and is unbeaten in 4 starts.

Flashback will need to maintain his composure his next trip which could be the Santa Anita Derby scheduled April 6 th.  If he wins that race he could be listed as a favorite going into the Derby.  He proved himself in the Robert B. Lewis but took the early speed and fell short of winning the San Felipe to Hear The Ghost.

Will Take Charge worked his way to the top of the leader board with accrued points after winning the Rebel (Grade 2) at Oaklawn, edging out Oxbow and possible derby contender Super Ninety-nine.   Oxbow has current odds of 20/1 which have dropped since early wagering began in February, but he has potential, this horse is bred to go the distance.

Thistledown is participating in the early pool which will close on Sunday, March 24 th at 6:00p.m. (ET)  With the derby several weeks away and the contenders slowly maturing and improving anything can happen!  Good luck race fans.
