Kentucky Derby Lineup Changes as Bob Baffert scratches Hoppertunity

Hoppertunity out of Kentucky Derby 140

Louisville - What a difference a day makes.  Today Bob Baffert announced that his colt, Hoppertunity, will miss this year's Kentucky Derby due to a sore left front foot.

The colt would have been ridden on Saturday by jockey Mike Smith.  The word was quickly making its way around the Churchill track and Bob's response was, "The colt is fine but not quite at 100 percent and it's too close to the race, so I pulled the plug."

The trainer noticed that the colt was experiencing some issues on Wednesday with the inside quarter of his left foot.  During a warm up the colt did not seem bothered but Baffert felt it was best for the colt not to run.  The colt was scanned today and the foot that is injured will be soaked.

Oddsmaker, Mike Batttaglia, switched up the morning line as Hoppertunity was listed as the co-favorite and training well this week.  California Chrome will remain as the favorite with odds of 5-2.

With one spot open in the Derby all horses from post 12 and up will move down one gate.  Dance With Fate, who pulled gate 12 in the draw, will now break from post 11.    The owners of Pablo Del Monte are expected make a decision as to whether or not their colt will run on Saturday. Their colt had been wait listed after a third place finish in the Toyota Blue Grass Stakes and not having enough points to make the top 20.

Baffert will now send only one horse into the starting gates, Chitu, will enter with odds at 20-1.
