Orrville Tornado: National Weather Service says EF1 tornado touched down in Wayne County

Maximum winds at 95 mph

ORRVILLE, Ohio - The National Weather Service rated the tornado that touched down south of Orrville in Wayne County.

The NWS said it was an EF1 tornado, the second lowest ranking, with winds at 95 mph. It traveled about a mile.

NewsChannel5 Chief Meteorologist Mark Johnson reported live on NewsChannel5 Wednesday afternoon that the tornado struck around 3 p.m.

Most of the damage from the tornado was centered on a house on McQuaid Road. When the funnel cloud touched down, it ripped off the roof over the bedroom and tossed it 75 yards away.

The NWS sent a crew to the site to survey the damage and determined the strength of the twister.

The residents were not home at the time, and their three pets were unharmed. No injuries were reported from the storm.

Johnson determined a tornado had struck based on spotters on the ground and video showing debris in the air as the storm struck.
