Early Wednesday morning at around 12 a.m., Canton officers received a 911 hang up call from the 1300 block of 22nd street.

When the caller called back, he told officers that he had asthma and requested an inhaler while telling officers he also had a gun in his possession.

Officers arrived on scene to find Hayden J. Stutz, 24, of Canton, holding his girlfriend by the neck against her will. He told the officers several times that he had a pistol but did not care what happened, according to a news release.

While officers attempted to get the suspect to release his girlfriend, he made several movements indicating he was going to inflict serious harm to her.

That's when an officer approached the man and fired a single shot, striking him in the head.

The man was transported to Aultman Hospital by the Canton Fire Department where he later died from his injuries.

The Canton Detective Bureau is continuing to investigate the shooting.
