Trash collectors are telling residents to be careful what they put in the trash after two garbage trucks caught fire Wednesday morning — one in Westlake and the other in Parma.

The reasons for the fires are still under investigation, but they could be due to “unacceptable materials” placed in the trash, Rumpke Waste and Recycling tells News 5.

"Unacceptable materials" include hot grills, charcoal, lithium ion batteries, and pool chemicals.

The Westlake fire started at 10:45 a.m. on Laughlin Lane. The driver rushed out of the burning vehicle and called for help.

In Parma, a Republic Waste truck caught fire in the 2200 block of Brookdale Blvd around 10:56 a.m.

No injuries were reported in either incident.

Authorities warn residents that they should contact their local solid waste district on how to properly get rid of hazardous materials.
