CLE graffiti crackdown: 18 suspects indicted

Cleveland police second district detectives are in the midst of what is likely to be the biggest graffiti vandalism sweep in city history.

18 graffiti vandalism suspect were indicted on April 12, and another 5 suspects will be indicted by the of the week.

Police said the suspects range in ages from 15 to 40 years of age.

Residents west side Cleveland residents like Gualissa Garcia and Elaine Shamon have played an instrumental roll in this on-going graffiti sweep.

"It's disrespectful to the people that work hard to make money to fix these houses up," said Shamon. "Let them paint the jail, let them paint the graffiti in the jail. or clean this, or clean it up yep."

Shamon pointed to her next-door neighbor's home, graffiti vandals spray painted brand new Andersen window that were installed at the house just a few months ago.

Police told newsnet5.com the vandals are now starting to tag occupied homes more often.

"I don't know what that graffiti means, we just had the house painted and now the graffiti is back," said Garcia.

"The police they came over here and talked to us about it, and they said that there was a couple more house that had the same tags on them in this area."

However, graffiti Facebook group Graffiti Heart told newsnet5.com making more arrests isn't the answer to reducing the graffiti problem. 

Group organizer Stamy Paul said creating more graffiti safe zones throughout the city will help reduce the issues.

Meanwhile police explained those convicted could face up to 6 months in jail and a $500 fine,
