Depression: The Silent Struggle

Posted

Depression. Over 300 million people are living with it and nobody wants to talk about it.

African-Americans make up about a third of the cases in the U.S. And most African-American males who have it, never seek treatment. The stigma keeps them suffering in silence.

Mike Berry wants to change the stigma surrounding mental illness. His transparency about living with depression helps others to break the silence in their own lives. He was told to stay quiet and just pray it away. But that didn't work for Berry, so he sought counseling and found that long walks in the Cleveland Metroparks would calm his mind.

Now, Berry does motivational videos, directs feature films and documentaries, and speaks all over the country about mental illness and how to live with it. His recent documentary titled "Releasing The Pressure" takes an in depth look at depression and those who fight it every day.
