Two people robbed an elderly couple in Akron Wednesday morning, getting away with money the pair was going to use to buy burial plots.
According to Akron police, around 11:30 a.m. the 84-year-old homeowner opened his door at his home on Boxwood Avenue after he heard a knock. When he answered, a man said he was going to put up a fence next door and wanted the elderly resident to come outside to look at the property.
Once outside, that suspect also asked about purchasing a vehicle.
At the same time, another man went into home, walked past the resident's wife — a 91-year-old woman — and entered their bedroom. He took money from an unlocked safe and dresser drawers.
Around that time, the victims' son came to visit and asked what was happening. That's when the suspects ran off.
The elderly couple told News 5 that $50,000 and jewelry was stolen. They said the money was being saved to do work on the house and buy burial plots.
