The Akron Fire Department has issued an all-clear for those who evacuated the area around West Emerling after an explosion at a nearby chemical plant Wednesday afternoon.
Evacuated individuals can now safely return to their homes and businesses. Authorities determined there is no ongoing risk of chemical exposure in the area and the scene at Emerald Performance Materials is fully secure, Akron police said.
Police said exposure to the chemical involved in the explosion, butadiene, can cause irritation to the eyes, throat, nose and lungs. Butadiene is used to make rubber.
No serious injuries were reported.
