Firefighters save injured duck trapped on thin ice

Posted

Firefighters from Canal Fulton and Lawrence Township made a very special rescue this week.

Joe Rocco and Ed Collet sprung into action wearing specialized ice gear, to save an injured duck stuck in a frozen pond at Discovery Park near downtown Canal Fulton.

The crew rushed to the park after receiving a few calls from folks who saw the animal stuck and struggling.

They were able to put their ice rescue training to use to save the animal, but Rocco told News 5 it wasn't a first; "Believe it or not, this is the second time I've rescued a duck...Last year we rescued a horse from the ice," he said.

They named their new friend Cilantro and snapped a quick a picture together while warming up before dropping the duck off at an animal rehabilitation center.

"It's my nature I guess. To help anything, animal or human," Joe Rocco said.

The firefighters told News 5 to share a message: Stay away from ice — and leave any rescue missions up to them.
