A 38-year-old man who fought back against an armed robber Thursday night in Akron was shot in the leg when he tried to knock the gun out of the shooter's hand.

The robbery happened around 9:30 p.m. in the 600 block of Sherman Street, according to police. Authorities said the victim, who is from Medina, was traveling through the area in his SUV when he stopped to talk to another man.

That's when the man pulled out a handgun and demanded the victim's belongings. "Give me everything you got," the man said to the victim, according to police. The victim reached out and tried to knock the gun away, but the man fired a shot and the victim was struck in the leg.

The shooter ran off afterward. The victim was taken to a nearby hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. A female passenger in the SUV wasn't injured in the shooting.

Authorities said the suspect is described as a black male in his 20s with dreadlocks with the first name "Jake."

Anyone with information about the shooting is asked to contact Akron police.
