A man died Wednesday afternoon after the stolen car he was traveling in crashed into a tree in Akron.
The crash happened around 2 p.m. on the 400 block of Eastland Avenue.
Police said the man was a passenger in a car that was heading westbound near Niagara Avenue. The driver lost control and drove off the road and into a nearby tree and then struck a fire hydrant before rolling on its side and coming to a stop.
The passenger died at the scene. The driver of the car, who has not been identified, fled the area after the crash, police said.
The car had previously been reported stolen on Tuesday from a home on Kipling Street, authorities said.
The passenger's identity is being withheld until next of kin has been notified.
