Cleveland City Council voted Monday to raise the legal age that people can purchase tobacco products from 18 to 21.

The ordinance, which passed 13 to 3, does not make it illegal for people under the age of 21 to smoke tobacco, it just makes it illegal for them to buy it.

Although the ordinance still needs to mayor's signature to officially pass, the new law could go into effect as soon as March 1, 2016.

The ordinance was proposed last month, along with an ordinance to ban flavored tobacco products.
