A Lakewood man was sentenced to 15 years to life in prison for stabbing his mother to death, Cuyahoga County Prosecutor Tim McGinty announced Tuesday.

According to the prosecutor's office, on July 17, 2015, Sean White, then 21, fatally stabbed his 56-year-old mother Kathleen Meany using a steak knife. At 3:36 a.m. that day, Meany called police and while on the phone she began screaming and the call ended.

When police arrived, Meany was bleeding on the kitchen floor and White was at the top of the stairs to the second floor covered in blood. Meany was taken to Fairview Hospital and was pronounced dead at 5:06 a.m.

The prosecutor's office said just before White's trial was scheduled to begin on Tuesday, he pled guilty to one count of murder and felonious assault. Following his plea, the judge sentenced him to 15 years to life in prison. The first time he will be eligible for parole is in 2030.
