Dozens of protestors gathered in Lyndhurst Monday evening to voice their disgust with the city’s mayor, Patrick Ward, over his method for reducing the city’s deer population.
The method, called trap and bolt, involves firing a 4-inch metal rod into the deer's brain.
"Someone who has been paid comes and puts a metal bolt through the brain of a deer. Frequently, they don't die after one bolt,” said Dr. Allen Segal.
But according to Ward, a study shows that Lyndhurst’s deer population is around 54 even though the numbers should be closer to 36.
"This is our only option to make sure that we bring our numbers down to a sustainable number,” he said.
"There are sprays to keep them away from your plants, there's birth control,” said protestor, Lynn Vendely.
But Ward said that's not an option right now.
"Birth control could be an option; it is not approved in the state of Ohio,” said Ward.
Many protestors said they will continue to push their message, despite the mayor's decision to move forward.
