CLEVELAND — The West Side Market won’t be the same for customers of Pinzone’s Market Fresh Meats after longtime owner and operator Tony Pinzone announced this week that he is leaving the market after 44 years in business.

Effective July 4, Pinzone said he will suspend all operations at the more than 100-year-old market and will consolidate the business and move it to the Parma location, where they have operated since 1995.

“After much soul-searching, this difficult decision was made to allow for a little more freedom, a little less responsibility, and in general just to make life a little easier for myself and my family,” he wrote in a Facebook post addressing his loyal customers and fellow vendors.

As someone who started helping his grandparents at the market’s vegetable arcade when he was just 13 years old, the routine and presence in the market is one that will always be a part of his family history and memories.

At the age of 19 in 1976, he became an owner of his own stand after working for other meat stands in the market.

“My 44 years of stand ownership have been absolutely rewarding to me and created relationships and memories that I will never forget. The West Side Market was, is, and will continue to be a magical place that I will always remember fondly and visit frequently,” he said.
