Trees planted in Canton destroyed by vandals

Vandalism has wasted thousands of taxpayer dollars in Canton.

City Engineer, Dan Moeglin said multiple trees that were recently planted as part of a city beautification plan were damaged or destroyed.

"We’ve heard some rumors that some kids are out and around,” said Moeglin. "Taxpayers are paying for it and we have the grant money. They’re actually hurting themselves; that's disappointing."

Moeglin said each tree costs $435. Most recently, eight trees were destroyed. But he said this is not the first time it has happened.

The trees are part of a multi-million dollar project in Canton that repaired roads, added street lights, bus stops and sidewalks.

Moeglin said, ultimately, the city’s plan is working as several residents have decided to invest in property.
