A driver crashed into a utility pole just after 2 a.m. Friday, knocking live wires down and leaving the broken pole on top of the car.
The driver was headed northbound on East 60th Street at a high rate of speed, according to a neighbor, who heard the car pass his house then crash. The man didn't want to be identified but said after the crash he thought he heard gun fire.
Police did not release any information at the scene.
A transformer on the pole was leaking oil into the street and wires were blocking East 60th Street along with a half dozen driveways.
A live wire was burning on the sidewalk and in the grass at the corner of East 60th Street and Bonna Avenue about 100 yards from the crash scene.
