This is Sophia.
She likes makeup and nail polish and wants to be a ballerina one day.
At 5 years old, Sophia is battling Wilms tumor — the most common type of kidney cancer in children.
We talked to Sophia and her grandmother, Kathy, as part of a series we are working on with University Hospitals and Rainbow Babies and Children's Hospital for Childhood Cancer Awareness Month.
"When she came home from daycare one day, when my daughter picked her up, she started throwing up and she wasn’t feeling well," said Kathy. "Took her to the ER. We found out there was a huge mass on her kidney and it burst. Since then it has spread to her lungs and she’s had many rounds of chemo, radiation, surgery and when the most conventional treatment wasn’t working we did some experimental."
Throughout September, you’ll see stories, like Sophia's, on our Facebook and Instagram pages, as well as on News5Cleveland.com.
